IPC European Swimming Championships
Berlin 2011

The Romanian team

Four young visually impaired swimmers aged 14-16 yrs, Samuel Ciorap, Naomi Ciorap, Petrisor Prundaru, Valentin Velecico, along with one physically disabled young swimmer, Ionel Romaniuc (16) and his carer Andrei Griguta accompanied by their trainer Emese Maniu and Sally Wood-Lamont participated for the first time in the IPC European Swimming Championships. All five swimmers formed the first group of Romanian swimmers to qualify for the IPC European Championships which was a remarkable achievement after only two years of competitive swimming.

Altogether 440 swimmers from 36 countries took part and for the young swimmers it was their toughest competition to date as they were competing as one of the youngest teams in the competition against swimmers with at least ten years of experience.

Naomi Ciorap took 4th place at the 200m individual medley and fifth place at the 100m breaststroke and 5th at the 50m freestyle qualifying for all three for London 2012.  She also was placed second in the women’s 100m backstroke and 6th at the 100m freestyle. Samuel Ciorap could only manage 6th place in the final of the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1,12minutes – his best time ever. Samuel also qualified for London at the 50m freestyle even though not getting a place in the first six. Valentin took 6 seconds of his best time at the 100m breastroke gaining 5th place meaning he is now 5th in the European ranking – an excellent result.

The youngsters performed well but in fact did not win any medals: however, all of them took between 3 and 7 seconds of their best times in every race demonstrating that they can only improve. We must remember that they are aged only between 14 and 16 and were competing against swimmers aged 20 years and older with most of them having over ten years of competitional swimming.

There were 21 countries altogether who sent teams here as a precursor to the European Championships in June and also as a qualifying tournament for the London Paralympics in 2012.
The 50m, ten lane swimming pool was opened only a few weeks beforehand and was an excellent venue to hold this competition.
On the first day Naomi Ciorap won the 100m butterfly and broke the IBSA World Championship record in her class S13 and for this received a gold medal. In the 50m breastroke Samuel Ciorap won the silver medal in class S12, just point 3 seconds from the Russian. In the 100m butterfly, Petre Prundaru won the bronze medal in the S13 class.
On the second day Samuel won a sılver medal at the 200m breaststroke ın a thrıllıng race agaınst the top Russıan and also a bronze medal at the 100m backstroke. Naomı Cıorap won a sılver medal at the 50m butterfly the dıfference between the gold medal wınner and her beıng only .04 of a second!

This was a great start for the team who only learnt to swim two years ago (Valentin Velecico only in November 2009) and an excellent preparation for the European Championships in July 2011.
