British Open
13-18 September 2011
Sheffield
This was one of the largest Open tournaments with 312 players from 43 countries, a Factor 40 tournament and the last major tournament before the European Championships in Split, Croatia. Three players took part: Dacian Makszin and Petru Ifrosa (CCSH Lamont, Cluj) and Gabriela Constantin (OK Bucuresti).
Gabriela Constantin lost two of her matches to the Netherlands and France but in both cases she took one set, almost two but finally losing 1-3 in both cases. Dacian won against Great Britain and lost to Serbia and should have won against the Russian as he was leading 2-0 so therefore he did not enter in the last 16. Petru won against Israel and Switzerland and went into the final 16 but was drawn against the French player who went on to win silver.
In the team event, Dacian partnered Cristian Saiger from Austria and Petru Ifrosa partnered Croatia while Gabriela partnered a Korean player and a GB player. Gabriela’s partners were not good and she lost both matches to Poland and to Ukraine.
Dacian won his first match against Great Britain while in the second match against Austria they lost. In the next round against a combined team Hong Kong/Korea they lost but in fact Dacian played extraordinarily well and with a better partner would have definitely gone on to the semi-finals. Petru was really unlucky in his draw and lost both matches against France and Germany.
This tournament was as strong as it will be in the European Championships so it was an excellent chance to meet the best players in the world. In the end Dacian won 340 ranking points while Petru won 320 – a very good result. However, Dacian must take care not to lose against weaker players than himself especially in the singles. Gabriela Constantin has progressed really well this year and though she did not win any points she really played very well.
Costa Rica Cup, Heredia
4-6 August 2011

91 players from 15 countries took part in the 2nd Costa Rica Cup and were accommodated in the Ramada Plaza Hotel, Heredia. Four Romanian players participated: Dacian Makszin, Petru Ifrosa (CCSH Lamont, Cluj) and Gabriela Constantin (OK Bucuresti) and Gabriela Nicola (Maraton’93 Lugoj).

Gabi Constantin won both her matches against two Brazilian players achieving for the first time an international gold medal while Gabi Nicola won two matches against a Canadian and Mexican player but losing to the class 9 Japanese player
winning the silver medal. Dacian was unlucky in the draw and lost both his matches to the Argentinian player and the Japanese both of whom went on to win silver and gold respectively. Petru won both his group matches moving on to the final 8 but lost his first match to a Colombian player.
In the doubles the girls won one match against the Brazilians but lost their 2nd match to the combined team of Canada and Japan winning the silver medal. Dacian and Petru in the team event class3-5 won against the Mexican team but lost 2-3 to the Brazilian team going into the final four. In the semi-final they lost 2-3, the final set being lost at advantage. Playing for the bronze medal they met Brazil again but this time in a thrilling final match they won 3-2.
Copa Costa Rica was a well organized tournament and a much higher level than expected. All the top players from the Americas were there and the team did very well in the end to come back to Romania with one gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
Hungarian Open
Eger, Hungary 10-13 March 2011
Twenty countries and 170 athletes participated in the Hungarian Open in Eger, Hungary in 2011 including four from Romania: Gabriela Constantin (OK Bucuresti); Gabriela Nicola (Marathon’93 Lugoj) Dacian Makszin and Petru Ifrosa both from (CCSH Lamont). This year the ITTF Para-TT cancelled the Open competition so only singles and the team event are now played.
Gabriela Constantin won against a German player and entered in the final six and then won her second match with an Australian player putting her in the semi-finals. Finally she took fourth place, an excellent result. Dacian won two of his three matches in his group finishing top of his group and a place in the final 8. He won his third match against Argentina entering him in the semi-finals. However he lost his final two matches putting him in 4th place also.
Gabriela Nicola played exceptionally well but lost all four matches in her group and Petru too lost both his matches to Poland and Germany but in all cases they were very closely fought with sets being lost at the advantage.
In the team event Dacian partnered a player from Israel while Petru partnered an Italian player. Both were in a group of five teams insuring 4 matches each. Dacian lost his first match to Slovenia but won a very good match against Argentina. In the third match against Italy they won 3-0 and in the final match they lost 3-1 against the combined team of Serbia/Hungary. Petru’s partner was not a good choice and he lost his first three matches but in the final match against a Hungary team they won 3-1. The girls were placed in the team event class 8-10 which was very difficult for them. They lost the first match against a combined team of Hungary-Slovakia but it was very close and they both played really well. In the second match they played against Australia and Gabi Nicola won a single match but finally they lost 3-1 against the class 10 players.
Finally Dacian won a bronze medal at the team event and 280 points; Gabriela Constantin won 40 points, Gabi Nicola and Petru won each 60 points. It was the first international competition of the year and the results were very good for our international team.

Against France it was a wonderful match and they only lost 2-3 and in the match for the bronze medal they lost 3-1 leaving them in 4th place.
Petru lost his first match against Slovakia and in the second match against Israel and therefore did not go any further and the two girls lost all four matches.
This tournament was like the European Championships – just as big and all the major players were there so it was an excellent chance to meet the best players in the world. In the end Dacian won 440 ranking points and 4th place in the teams - a wonderful result for such a high level of tournament. Gabriela Constantin won 80 points a good result for her too.
