Competitions
in 2009Budapest Open
19-22 March
Thirty
countries comprising 176 players participated in this international
competition. The competition took place at the SportMax center a new
state of the art sports centre on the outskirts of Budapest.
Three
Lamont Centre members attended the Budapest Open, Dacian, Petru in
class 3 and 4 respectively and Bobi in class 6 while Victor Doana from
the Lugoj club participated in Class 8 though from now on after
classification he will play in Class 7. The first event was the Open
and Petru was drawn against a class 1 player from Italy which he won
easily and then moving on to the second round he was drawn against No.
1 in class 5 from France. Unfortunately the Spanish player that Dacian
was drawn against did not arrive from Spain so he moved on to the
second round and there he met the Korean no 1 and lost. Bobi was drawn
against the no. 1 player in class 7 and Victor also against no 2 in
clas 7 and both lost their first round matches.
In
the single event Dacian was placed in a group of four and though he won
his first match easily against an Italian, in the second he played
against the Hungarian and narrowly lost 3-2. The third match was
against one of the top seeds in his class so he did not move on to the
next round. Petru did not win one of his matches in his group and
neither did Victgor . Bobi won two of his matches but lost on points to
move further on.
In
the team event there was chaos because from January this year this has
become a knock-out event and in this way the top four seeds are given
the best draws and thereafter it is done by computerised random
selection. In this way instead of playing three or four matches if the
luck of the draw is against teams will only play one match and then
they are out of the competition. Exactly this happened to Dacian and
Petru as the were drawn against the Korean team - lost 3-0 - and they
were finished their competition on the second day afternoon only having
played 6 matches in the whole competition. This means that the best
players will continue to have practice within themselves while the less
experienced younger players will never have the chance to gain
experience. Victor also played his first match and lost so he was also
out the competition. Bobi partnered by an Italian won his first match
again the Austrian team, moved on to the semifinals where they met the
no. 1 in class 6 - the Danish team and then played for the third or
fourth place against the Israel team. It was a superb match Bobi losing
in the single match 2-3 with the last set 10-12. Then he and his
partner won the doubles and it was up to Bobi to win the next match and
again it was 2-2 and Bobi lost finally 9-11.
Finally Dacian and Petru gained sixty points each, Victor no points while Bobi managed a very well earned 90 points.
2nd Al-Watani Club Open
Amman, Jordan
2nd – 6th April 2009
115
players from 14 countries took part in the 2nd Al-Watani Club Open in
Amman Jordan. Our accommodation was in the Al-Akatamani Plaza hotel.
The Open started with the Open event which took place on Friday 3rd
April. Dacian and Petru both were drawn against Class 5 players from
Egypt and Spain respectively and lost their matches. Bobi was drawn
against a class 8 Yemen player and won easily 3-0. The Jordan player
did not turn up so he moved into the last 16 where he was drawn against
the Russian class 10 and he lost.
The
Singles started the next day only and Petru had the first match against
a Jordan player but the transport was very late that morning and he
arrived at the hall only 5 minutes before the match. He had not time to
warm up, the sports hall was very cold and th ough he should have
beaten him easily he lost 1-3. His next opponent was the Korean and
Petru was out of the singles competition in which he had an excellent
chance to move into the final 4.
Dacian
was drawn against an Iraq and a Jordan player both of whom he beat
easily. His next match was with another Iraq player and again he beat
him 3-0 and he was in the semifinals. He then had to play the Jordanian
who won the gold and Dacian had only to beat the Egyptian player for
the bronze. Unfortunately he lost but he had won 180 points.
In
Bobi’s class there were only 4 players and Bobi beat the Greek and the
Jordanian easily but unfortunately lost to the Egyptian for the gold
medal but anyway he had won the silver.
In
the team event Dacian and Petru had a lucky draw and only had to beat
the Jordan team to enter the semi-finals which they did 3-0. They then
lost to France but anyway had won the silver medal. Bobi partnered the
Greek for the match against the Malaysian team. It was an excellent
match but unfortunately Bobi lost 3-2. They then moved on to play for
the bronze medal and easily beat the Jordanian team 3-0.
It
was a good competition and an excellent experience for the Romanian
team to meet the players from the African and Asian continents.
The styles were different, the atmosphere was electric and the
officials very nice. Finally Dacian won 240 WRP points and a silver
medal; Petru won 60 points and a silver medal and Bobi won 160 points
and a silver and bronze medal.
SLOVAKIA OPEN
21-24 APRIL 2009
275
players from 32 countries met in Piestany, Slovakia for the first ever
40 Factor ITTF-ParaTT competition. The first day was devoted
solely to the Open competition.
Bobi
was drawn against a class 10 player from Poland and lost 0-3; Petru was
drawn against a class 3 player from Austria but lost as did Victor with
a class 7 player from the Czech Republic.
In
the singles Petru lost all his games to Japan, Croatia and France
respectively. Victor playing in Class 7 for the first time after his
reclassification in Budapest was in a group with Great Britain and the
Netherlands and also lost all his games. Bobi had the no 1 class 6
player from Denmark in his group and played well against him losing
2-3. The second game was with a Croatian player which he won 3-1.
Moving into the last 12 he was drawn against a French player losing 1-3
but it was a good game and the French went on to win the silver medal.
The
last even was the team event and Victor and Bobi formed a team in Class
7. They were drawn against the Netherlands in the first round. It was a
hard match Bobi losing 2-3 and Victor losing 0-3 but they won the
doubles. Finally Bobi lost 1-3 to the other Netherland player.
Petru
formed a team with Barry, a Canadian, and they played against a joint
Slovakian and Swedish team. Petru lost to the Swedish player and Barry
lost to the Slovakian player but then Petru and Barry won the doubles.
Following that Petru beat the Slovakian 3-2 and really played well and
now the final match was played between the Swede and the Canadian but
unfortunately Barry lost 1-3.
All
in all it was a good experience for the Romanians before the European
Championships. They met most of the players they will be playing
against in Genoa in June. Finally Bobi won 60 WRP, Petru 120 and Victor
20.

EUROPEAN TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
3-14 JUNE, 2009 – GENOA
288
European table tennis players gathered in Genoa for the European
Championships. The Romanian team comprising Victor Doana from Lugoj,
Alyn Nicolae from Bucharest and three members from the Lamont Centre
Cluj namely Bobi Simion, Dacian Makszin and Petru Ifrosa, was placed at
the Hotel SanBiagio, nestled in the hills surrounding Genoa and about
45 minutes from the Vaillant Palace which was the sports venue.
The
Open event started on the 5th June and Victor was drawn against a
Swedish player class 6 and Alyn against a Belgian class 8 player. Both
lost their matches as did Petru against a class 3 player. Bobi was
drawn against an Austrian class 6 player whom he beat 3-1 and Dacian
against a class 1 player whom he beat easily 3-0. In the second
round Bobi had to play against a class 10 player from Sweden who went
on to win the bronze medal, while Dacian had a difficult game against
the top Israel wheelchair player. Both were knocked out of the second
round but in fact they had won 150 World Ranking Points (WRP) each, a
good start to the competition.
In
the singles, Victor, Alyn, Dacian and Petru were all in groups of three
and did not have much luck in the draw. They lost all their matches.
However Bobi was drawn in a group of 4 and though he won easily against
the Iceland player and the Spanish player he had a tough match with the
German player but finally won 3-2, the last set being 11-9 for Bobi.
Unfortunately even though he was the only player to win all three of
his matches in the group and went into the final 16 knockout
competition, he had very bad luck and was drawn against the world
ranking no 3 Croatian player and lost 1-3. The Spanish player he had
beaten easily obtained a very good draw and went into the last 8
players and finally played for the the bronze medal. It was really
disappointing for Bobi, because he had played very well and with
another draw could have definitely been among the medal winners. Anyway
he won a further 150 WRP which provided some compensation.
The
final competition was the team event and this year this has been played
as a knockout competition. Unfortunately Dacian and Petru were drawn
against the Slovakian team who are ranked 6 and 9 respectively in the
world. The problem was that their rackets were not allowed to be used
after racket control as there was too much glue used and they had to
play with other rackets. It was most unfortunate because they both
played very well and could have won this match if they had been playing
with their own rackets. Finally they lost 3-0. Bobi was playing
in class 7 with Victor and they were drawn against the Czech Republic
ranked 13 and 16 in the world and were beaten easily. It is quite
obvious that if Bobi had been playing in class 6 in the team event he
would have had many chances to win more points and maybe could have
been in the final 4. Unfortunately he does not have any Romanian
players good enough to be his partner in class 6.
In
the end it was a very good experience for everyone concerned and
finally Bobi won 300 WRP while Dacian won 150, not a bad result
considering they were playing against the top players in Europe.
National Table Tennis Championships
Cluj-Napoca 21-24 June
33 players took part in the National Table Tennis Championships and accommodation and meals were at the Hotel Sport. There were 16 players from the Lamont Centre and Sports Club.

International Polish Table Tennis Open
Cetniewo, Poland
2-6 September 2009
The Olympic Centre CETNIEWO is conveniently located at the
Wladyslawowo beach on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea, less than 70 km
from Gdansk, Poland. 114 players from 21 countries participated in this high level competition.
In the Open competition Dacian was drawn against a class 1 player and won easily and Petru also won his first match but both lost in the second round. Bobi was drawn against a Polish Class 10 player and it was an amazing match which unfortunately Bobi lost narrowly 2-3, the last set losing 9-11. If he had won he would have gained 100 WRP which would have been wonderful but it was not to be.
In the singles Dacian and Petru lost all their matches to Korea and Argentina and Japan and Ukraine respectively and were eliminated from the following round. However Bobi won all three matches in his group and then beat a French player 3-0 in the semifinals to enter in the final with Germany. He had played this player in the European Championships and it was a very difficult match which he won 3-2, the final set being 11-9 for him. However in Poland he beat him 3-0 easily to win the gold medal.
In the team event Dacian and Petru were drawn against Japan in their first match and lost and in the semifinals were drawn against Slovakia who beat them easily.
Bobi’s partner in the team event was Victor a 14 year old boy from Mexico with whom he had won the gold medal in Venezuela. Their first match was against a Polish team starting at 5pm on the same day Bobi had played six matches. Though he won his first match and with Victor won the doubles, both he and Victor lost their other matches so finally it was 2-2 and Victor had to play against the Polish player at 7pm that evening. It was a very tense time with everyone looking on and Victor knew it was up to him to win the match and it was all a little too much forhim and he lost narrowly and the score was 3-2 for the Polish team. The next morning, fresh and well-rested they played against a combined Australian and Polish team and won easily to win the silver medal at the team event.
It was a well organized competition in an ideal location. Bobi won two medals, gold and silver and also 210 WRP overall. Both Dacian and Petru also won 60 WRP.
5th International German Table Tennis Open
Stuttgart, Germany
17-21 September 2009

175 players from 21 countries participated in this very high level competition.
In the Open competition Bobi was drawn against a class 8 player and won 3-0 giving him 100 WRP though it was a difficult match. Petru was drawn with the same Japanese player he had played in Poland and unfortunately he lost 1-3 though it was a very close match.
In the singles Bobi had three matches on the Friday evening from 5pm – 7pm. He won against the Australian and the Spanish but in the last match he lost to the French player 2-3, the last set being 9-11. It was a lot of games to play one after the other but he had qualified for the last 16. On Saturday morning Petru had all three matches between 10am – 12.30. He won against the Irish player, and then played against the no. 1 French player which he lost 0-3. Finally he played against the same Japanese player and lost 1-3 again playing very well. Bobi then had his other single match with the French player whom he had beaten easily in Poland but unfortunately this time he lost 2-3, the last set being 10-12.
In the team event Petru partnering an Israeli player were drawn against the favourites – the French team who eventually won the gold medal. Though both players played really well they finally lost 0-3.
Bobi’s partner in the team event was Raimondo Alecci from Italy and the first match they had a bye. On Sunday morning at 9am they played their first team match against the Swiss team and won 3-0. At 1pm they had their second match with Croatia the number 1 team, where Bobi won his first match though Raimondo lost. At the doubles it was an extremely close match but finally they lost 2-3. Unfortunately Bobi lost the 2nd game and the match was finished. The last match was at 3pm against the Israel team and it lasted 3.5 hours but finally Bobi and Raimondo won 3-2 and received the bronze medal.
The competition was not well organized but the transport, food and accommodation for us was excellent. Petru won 80 WRP while Bobi won 230 points and a bronze medal.
1st Rivas VaciaMadrid International Open
Rivas VaciaMadrid, Spain
7-11 October 2009
68 standing players from 18 countries participated in this competition. Apart from the transport the organization and conditions were excellent. Bobi Simion, Alexandru Bordea and Gabriela Constantin, both from Bucharest, participated. In class 6, 23 players took part and it was very difficult, the competition being in fact the same as the European Championships. In the other classes the competition was not so tough and in fact only six female players participated.
In the Open competition Bobi was drawn against Peter Rosenmeier no1 in class 6 and lost 0-3. Alex was drawn against a Spanish class 9 player and lost 1-3 a good result for his first match. Gabi was drawn against a class 10 player from Israel and lost 0-3.
In the singles Bobi had three matches. He won against the Spanish and the Swiss players but lost to Raimondo Alecci from Italy. He therefore qualified for the last 16. On Saturday morning Bobi played against Thomas Fernandez from France beating him 3-1 and therefore qualified for the last 8. He met the Israel player in the quarterfinals whom he had beaten in Stuttgart but this time lost 1-3. Alex had a very tough group and lost both his matches and for Gabi it was the same.
Bobi’s partner in the team event was Raimondo Alecci from Italy and the first match they had a bye because there were 12 teams altogether. They played their first team match against the combined Russian/Swiss team and after a very difficult match won 3-2 to enter in the quarter finals. Their second match with Croatia the number 1 team, where Raimondo won his first match though Bobi lost. At the doubles it was an extremely close match but finally they lost 2-3. Unfortunately Bobi lost the final game and the match was finished. Their last match for place 3 & 4 was against the French team and it lasted 2 hours but finally Bobi and Raimondo lost 1-3 and won nothing. Alex partnered a player from Great Britain and winning the first match 3-2 assured them a medal as they were only 4 teams. Finally Alex won the silver medal. Gabi played with the girl from Peru and finally they were assured the bronze medal as there were only 3 teams altogether.
Finally Bobi won 100 WRP, while Alex won 300 WRP and a silver medal and Gabi won a bronze medal. It was a good result for everyone concerned.
Copa Tango VII
Buenos Aires, Argentina
18-21 November 2009
150 players from 22 countries participated in this high level competition.
In the Open competition Petru was drawn against a class 1 from Argentina winning easily 3-0. In the second round he played against G. Rosec from France in class 5 and Petru played extraordinarily well but finally lost 2-3, the final set being 8-11. Bobi was drawn against a class 10 player from Brasil losing 0-3.
In the singles Petru was in a group with France, Germany and Colombia and won two of his matches, losing to France, but qualifying for the final 8. In the quarterfinals he played against Croatia losing 1-3. The Croatian player went on to win the bronze medal.
Bobi’s group comprised France, Argentina and Costa Rica and he won 2 of his matches losing to France. In the quarter finals he lost to Thomas Rau from Germany and he was out of the singles competition.
In the team event Petru was partnered with a Brasilian player and in their first match against Argentina they won easily, 3-0. In the next round they met the German team who eventually won the silver medal and lost 0-3. Again the problem was that he did not have a good partner.
Bobi partnered the German player and the first match was a bye and the second against the combined team France/Spain. Bobi this time beat the French player 3-0 – it was a pity he had not done that the day before. Anyway they won that round and entered the semifinal which they lost after a very hard match. However they had won the silver medal.
So finally Bobi won the silver medal at the team event and 110 points while Petru won altogether 280 points…a very good result.
Brazilian Open
Brasilia, Brazil
25-30 November 2009
190 players from 40 countries participated in this Factor 40 competition which unfortunately was the worst organized competition we have ever been to. There were transport, hotel and also sport venue problems – no water, no ball boys so much so that at 10.30am on the first day of the competition all the players and coaches stopped play and refused to go on until some of the problems were resolved.
In the Open competition Petru was drawn against a German who did not turn up so he moved into the second round where he played against N. Moltineiri from Italy, class 3. The Italian player is one of the most experienced players around but Petru played extraordinarily well winning 3-2. Bobi was drawn against a class 8 player from Taipei losing 0-3.
In the singles Petru was in a group with France, Japan and Brazil and lost two of his matches France and Japan, but winning against the Brazilian.
Bobi’s group comprised Italy, France and Costa Rica. With the Italian, Raimondo Alecci he lost the first two sets but recovered to win the next two. In the 5th set Bobi was leading 7-1 but in the end lost 10-12, a really unbelievable result. Against Costa Rica who Bobi has beaten consistently, he was not focused at all and stupidly lost 2-3. Even though winning against the Brazilian it did not matter, he had not progressed to the quarter finals and he had only himself to blame. He had lost the opportunity to win a medal in the singles event at a factor 40 tournament where he was top seed.
In the team event Petru was partnered with a Mexican player and in their first match against Brazil Petru lost against the top wheelchair Brazilian. The Mexican should have beaten the other Brazilian easily but failed to do so and in the doubles they lost 1-3. Again the problem was that he did not have a good partner.
Bobi’s team comprised Germany and Mexico and their first match was a bye while the second was against the combined team France/Costa Rica. Bobi won his match 3-0 and so did the German and together Bobi and the Mexican won the doubles easily 3-0. They now automatically entered the final which they won 3-1 after a hard match winning the gold medal.
So finally Bobi won the gold medal at the team event and 220 points while Petru won altogether 280 points…a very good result. However, Petru’s points were not enough to secure himself a place for the World Championships while Bobi, I hope, had learnt a valuable lesson. If he is to succeed as a top seed player every match counts and he must learn to concentrate every time.
