Competitions in 2008

REPORT OF LIVERPOOL OPEN
12-17 MARCH 2008

There were 175 participants from 23 countries at the Liverpool Open.  The competition was held in the Greenbank Sports Academy.

On the first day it was the Open competition. Dan was drawn against a class 8 from Spain and Bobi was drawn against a class 8 from Sweden and both lost their first match 3-0. Dacian was drawn against a class 3 from Italy while Petru was drawn against a class 2 from Belgium. Both won their first matches and moved on to second stage where they were both knocked out; Dacian against  a class 5 player and Petru against the Swedish player who went on to win the Wheelchair Open competition. The girls Maria and Florentina both were knocked out in the first round losing 3-0.

The second and third day was the team event. In the wheelchair team event class 4- 5 were combined and Petru and Dacian were placed in a group with Sweden, Austria and GBR. They beat the class 5 GB team 3-0 but lost both to Sweden and Austria who in fact won  2nd and 4th place respectively. In the Class 6 Team event Dan and Bobi were also in  a group of four teams. Though Bobi did win a match against the Swiss in the singles and had a great chance to win the second singles in the team event he lost his cool and finally they were beaten 3-2 by the Swiss team. Against the other two teams, Denmark and Austria/Sweden they had little chance and these teams went on to win first and second place in the team event. In the female team event Maria and Florentina lost all their matches.

The final day was the singles competition. In the class 3 event Dacian won his match against the Irish player but lost to both Austria and Spain – the Spanish and Austrian player finally went on to win the gold and bronze medals respectively. Petru won his first match against the British player and therefore moved on to the quarter finals. He had to play against the Swedish player and though at first losing 2-0 he regained his composure to arrive at 2-2 and then in a nail-biting final he lost 11-9. In the play-off for bronze medal he lost 3-1. Dan played very well in his group but finally lost all 3 matches. Bobi won two matches in his group moving on to the last eight but at that stage lost to the Swedish player who won the gold medal in class 6. The girls had no chance in their groups losing 3-0 in all three matches.

Finally it was a very good competition for us; Petru won 260 World Ranking Points; Dacian won 240 points; Bobi won 70 points and Dan 10 points. All four Lamont centre members continue to show good progress.

Margarita Island Table Tennis Championship, Venezuela 19-23 November 2008

On the 17th November Bobi Simion, Dacian Makszin and Petru Ifrosa flew to Margarita Island to take part in the first Margarita Island Table Tennis Championship. 84 sportsmen/women from 15 countries took part. All three won their first match in the open competition but therafter all lost in the second round. Petru played against the Argentinian who won the silver medal in the Open, Dacian played against the Open Gold medallist from Austria, while Bobi played against the German Andreas Nau who also won the Gold medal in the Open.
In the singles competition there were three groups in Dacian’s class 3 and unfortunately he was placed in the same group as the silver and gold medallist from the Open. He won only one match and therefore did not go any further. Petru on the other hand won all his matches in the group and entered the semifinals and then the final where he met the Class 5 Argentinian whom he lost to.  However, a silver medal was an excellent result. Bobi played a round robin with four players from Spain and Mexico and won every match resulting in the gold medal.
In the team event Bobi partnered with a young Mexican Victor Reyes again played a round robin of four teams, one from Spain, Jordan/Argentina, and Venezuela. They won all their matches securing the gold medal. Dacian and Petru won all matches in their group against Colombia and Venezuela, the latter match was a very tough match where both Petru and Dacian won the first two matches but lost narrowly in the doubles 2-3, the last match being 8-11. Then Petru lost his match to the Venezuelan  Edson Gomez whom Dacian had beat 3-0 but Dacian saved the day by beating the other Venezuelan 3-1. The next morning they were in the semi finals and played well to beat the joint team of Turkey-Mexico automatically placing them in the final. In the final against Argentina both Petru and Dacian lost their matches 2-3 and 1-3 but played extremely well in the doubles winning 3-2 but then Petru had to face the class 5 Argentinian again. However it was an excellent result winning the silver medal.
It was great result overall and a very worthwhile venture to go to South America. Petru won  840 WRP, Dacian 330 WRP and Bobi 240 WRP plus two gold and three silver medals.
