Report of Slovakia Open

Piestany, 30 May – 3 June 2007

272 players from over 26 countries arrived in Piestany, Slovakia for the largest tournament outside the European Championships. This also included teams from outside Europe such as Argentina, Brazil, China, Japan, Korea, which confirmed it as an excellent Factor 30 tournament and a very high level competition.

Four players from the Lamont Centre attended: Mihai Miron (Cl.8), Mihail Sargu (Cl. 10), Petru Ifrosa (Cl. 4) and Dacian Makszin (Cl.3). Because of Anca Chereches’ pregnancy, Mihail Sargu took over as trainer.

In the Open none of the players had any chance, everyone receiving unlucky draws.

In the Singles Mihai was placed in a group of four players; no 12 (China)in the World Ranking List (WRL), No 11 (Poland) and no 43 (Croatia). He did very well to beat the Croatian and won a deserved 90 WRL points.

Mihail was placed in a group of 4 players: no 6 (Slovakia), no 11 (Germany) and no 43 (Russia). It was a tough group and though he won some sets he did not manage to win any points.

Petru was placed in a group of four players; no 9 (Germany), no.15 (Brazil) and no 28 (Croatia). He did very well to beat the Brazilian and won 120 WRL points.

In class 3 there were 9 groups and Dacian was placed in a group of 4 players; no 10 (Austria), no 14 (Great Britain) and no 57 (Korea). He did well to beat the Korean and won 90 WRL points.

In the TEAM event Dacian and Petru were in a group with China, Korea and the Czech Republic and in fact China and Korea went on to win the team event, place 1 and 2 respectively. Mihai and Mihail did not fare much better being drawn against Sweden and Austria. Sweden went on to win the bronze medal.

This was an excellent tournament of the highest level and was a wonderful experience for all the players. To meet the Chinese and Korean team was an excellent opportunity to study and learn from their style of play and in fact both these teams went home with the majority of the cups and medals!

XXX “LIGURIA CUP”, International Tennis Table Tournament
Genoa, 29 August – 2 September 2007

Two members of the Lamont Centre participated in this tournament, Mihai Miron and Mihail Sargu. As everyone is fighting for selection for Beiijing 2008, competition was fierce and altogether 151 players from 19 countries participated.

In the Open Mihai Miron played against an Italian player in class 10 and won 3-1 an excellent result for him. Mihail Sargu was drawn against a Class 6 and won easily 3-0.
Unfortunately for Mihai M his next opponent was Christophe Rozier no 2 in the world while Mihail S was drawn a very good player from Croatia. In the singles Mihai M also won a match coming 3rd in his group of 4 players while Mihail S also came third in his group winning easily against an Italian. In the team event they were placed in a group of four with Hungary, Croatia and a combined team of Italy & Spain. They beat the Italy & Spain and lost to both Hungary and Croatia who were in fact the winners of the silver and bronze medal respectively.

Both players won valuable points in this competition: Mihai Miron achieving 220 points while Mihai S won 250 points – an excellent result. This new partnership seems to be working well.

This was a very good preparation for the European championships that started on the 12 October.

Paralympic European Championships 2007
Kransjka Gorja, Slovenia 2007

35 countries, with 335 participants arrived in the beautiful resort of Kransjka Gora in Slovenia on the 10th October. Most of the competitors were housed in the Hotel Kompass. The Romanian team comprised 7 players: Dacian Makszin, Petru Ifrosa, Mihail Sargu and Mihai Miron from CCSH Lamont, Cluj Napoca and Victor Doana, Maria Stanescu from Lugoj and Gabi Constanta from OK Bucharest. Kranskja Gora is renowned as a ski resort and for us, the setting surrounded by beautiful mountains was excellent and as our hotel also had a very good swimming pool as well as a jacuzzi and sauna we were very pleased. The sports hall had 16 tables and there was a nearby school and a tent with paractice tables. The tent unfortunately was a little cold sometimes for practice and the problem was resolved in part by having some heaters put inside. On Thurday Maria Stanescu was scheduled for reclassification and eventually after a lot of discussion
it was decided that she could be placed in Class 8 instead of class 9.

The European Championships began with the Open. Petru was drawn against an Israel player class 1, which he won gaining 150 points. However he lost against a class 3 player from Great Britain, no 6 in the world in the second round. Daxcian was drawn against a Slovenian player which he won also gaining 150 points. In the second round he lost to a class 5 player from Germany, no 12 in the world. Mihai Sargu lost to a British player in Class 7, while Mihai Miron lost to a Netherlands player class 6. Victor Doana lost to a Russian class 8 player no. 29, Maria Stanescu to an Italian Class 10 player while Gabi lost to a class 6 player from Russia.

The singles began two days later and Mihail Sargu lost all his games in Class 10, Mihai Miron also placed in a very difficult group also lost every game. Victor was fortunate to have a Croatian player no 45 in his group whom he finally beat 3-2 gaining 150 points but losing the other two matches. Dacian was drawn in a group comprising the winner of the Open from France, who also won the bronze medal in the singles and also an Austrian player who went on to win the silver medals in the singles. The third player in the group was from Lithuania who Dacian beat in three sets obtaining a further 150 points. Petru was also drawn in a very difficult group with players no 5, 9 and 19 in the world ranking list and lost all his games. Maria and Gabi in their respective classes were totally outclassed losing all their matches 0-3.

The team event began on the 17th October and lasted until the 19th. Mihai Miron, Mihail Sargu and Victor were playing in Class 10 together and they were drawn against Sweden and Poland two of the top teams. They lost their two games easily and Sweden went on to win the silver medal. Gabi and Maria also lost their 4 games to Sweden, Poland, France and Lithuania. They only had one chance and that was with the Lithuania team and though Gabi won a set they again were outclassed completely. Dacian and Petru were put in a tough section with Italy, Austria and Slovenia. They were beaten easily by both Italy and Austria, who went on to win the silver and bronze medal in the teams respectively. However in a nail-biting match with Slovenia, Dacian and Petru won obtaining a further 150 points each.

The final points count was 450 points for Dacian, 300 points for Petru and 150 points for Victor

Sport Association “Il Gattopardo”
9th Trofeo del Mediterraneo
Agrigento, December 12-16th 2007

64 players (57 male and 7 female) from 20 countries arrived in Agrigento to participate in the 9th Trofeo del Mediterraneo Open for standing players. Four players from the Lamont Centre,Cluj took part: Bobi Simion, Dan Nasui, Mihai Miron and Mihail Sargu.

The Open competition started at 9am on the first day of the competition. Mihai M. was drawn against Jean-Yves Abbadie of France,Class 6 and lost 0-3; Dan was drawn against a German Class 7 player and lost 1-3; Mihail was drawn against Trombino, a Class 6 player from Italy and won 3-0 and then met a Class 9 Brazilian player and lost 0-3; Bobi was drawn against an Iraq Class 8 player and easily won 3-0 but unfortunately then met Rousseau, a class 10 player and lost 0-3. Rousseau went on to win the Open. However he had won 60 points.

That same afternoon the team event began. Bobi and Dan were in a group of 5 teams: GBR & Costa Rica; France& Greece; France; Italy. In the first match against GBR and Costa Rica Bobi played well but lost to the GB player. Dan lost to the Costa Rica player but then Dan and Bobi completely walked over them at the double event crushing them 0-3. The same happened with the French and Greek match and with the Italian team. With the French team Bobi was winning 2-0 against Dal Pan, lost complete control of the match and went on to lose 3-2. Exactly the same happened at the double event when Bobi and Dan were winning 2-0 and then went on to lose 3-2. Lack of experience at international competition was apparent here but for their first team event both Bobi and Dan won 30 points each, a good result and for Bobi it certainly could have been more if he had been able to control his emotions.

Mihai and Mihail were outclassed in their group of Sweden, Netherlands and Brazil losing 0-3 to Brazil and the Netherlands and 1-3 to Sweden, Mihail Sargu winning another 50 points here.

In the singles Dan lost 0-3 to all three players in his group though David Wetherill went on to win the Singles event and the French player in his group took 4th place. Bobi played well against the Swede but lost 0-3 who went on to win 3rd place and Bobi also lost to Abbadie who was second in the single event.

In Class 10 Mihail lost two matches 0-3 against Australia, France and won against the Italian 3-0 while Mihai in Class 8 lost all three matches 0-3 against Canada, France and Spain.

It is apparent that Bobi and Dan have created a good team in Class 6 and hopefully they can continue to improve their places in the World Ranking List in 2008
