Competitions in 2006

INTERNATIONAL WORLD RANKING TOURNAMENTS
IN TABLE TENNIS

March 2006
City of Liverpool Wheelchair Open 17-19th March

73 players in classes 1-5 from 15 countries participated in this very well organized competition. Dacian (Class 3) and Petru (Class 4) with our trainer Anca and myself accompanied the players. Accommodation was at the Marriott Hotel in the centre of Liverpool which I think is the best hotel we have ever stayed in. The transport arrangements to and from the Greenbank Sports Hall were excellent. The food was also very varied and good both at the hall and at the hotel.

It was a very high standard competition with most of the best players in Europe. In the Open competition Dacian won his first match in the Open competition while Petru was knocked out by no 4 in Europe. Dacian was then knocked out by Germany in his next match.

In the Team event – Class 4 - Dacian and Petru were in a group of three teams, Ireland and Germany. They beat Ireland and therefore went on to play for 3rd place against a team from Great Britain. Unfortunately they lost the match so they remained in 4th place at the team event.

In the Single event Dacian was in a group with Germany (No. 2 in the world) and Austria . He lost both matches. Petru won his first match against Ireland but then lost in the next round.

However in the end Petru won 110 World Ranking Points and Dacian120 – an excellent result for such a tough competition

Hungarian Open – Budapest
24-26th March

The Hungarian Open is one of the most expensive competitions in the IPTTC calendar so this year I decided not to stay in the designated hotel and we arranged accommodation at a pension which cut the costs of the participation fee by 60%. I also decided to take Dorel Muresan, Ancuta Runcan and Mihai Sargu to be classified officially. Therefore our team consisted of 6 players and the trainer Anca and myself.

There were 74 players from 10 countries. In the Open Dacian played against a class 4 Hungary and moved on to the next round where he lost to Greece and Petru also won against Hungary but lost against Germany (no 4) in the next round. All other players were knocked out in the first round. In the Team event Mihai partnered a Moldavian and they won a very good match against Hungary. Dorel and Mihai Sargu were playing in class 10 against some of the best players in the world and did not win a match. Ancuta did not have a partner so did not play in the team event. Dacian and Petru were playing in a group of 4 teams, Germany, Slovakia and Hungary. In the play-off for 3 and 4th place they beat Hungary and therefore won the bronze medal for 3rd place in the team event for class 4-5. In the Singles, Ancuta lost to Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. Mihai Sargu was beaten by France and Belgium and Dorel won a good match against Kuwait. Dacian and Petru had draws against top players and lost in the first rounds. The final total of WR points was:

Mihai Miron (8) 100
Dorel Muresan (8) 80
Petru Ifrosa (4) 170
Dacian (3) 220

First Serbia Open – Novi Sad
31- 2 March 2006

Three players came on to Novi Sad, Mihai Miron, Petru Ifrosa and Dacian Mackszin where we were joined by Dorina Vargatu and Victor Doana from Lugoj. None of us expected this to be such a well-attended competition but in fact there were altogether 130 players from 18 countries. We stayed in the Park Hotel which though classed as a 5* hotel was more like a good 3* hotel. The organization was good, we had our own transport, the food was not the best though the breakfast was superb.

In the Open Dorina got a bye into the last 16 but then lost to Poland. Petru and Dacian both beat Serbian players and went on to the next round where Petru was beaten by an Italian class 5, and Dacian was beaten by the Italian no 26. Mihai was drawn again a class 10 and was beaten 3-1, while Victor was drawn again the Polish class 7, no 4 and was beaten 3-0.

In the Teams Dorina formed a team with GB and Poland and won a doubles match against Russia and Serbia and moved into the last 8 where they lost to Poland. Dacian and Petru played in group B of the Teams Class 4. They won against the Serbian team, lost against the Italians and then met with the Hungarian team where in a very close match they narrowly lost 3-2. Mihai and Victor were in a group of 4 teams but they were the best teams France, Belgium and Poland. In the doubles match with Poland they both played very well but unfortunately lost.

In the Singles Dorina played against Slovakia and Serbia, Dacian against Austria and Serbia (no. 1 in class 3 ), Victor against Belgium (no. 1 in Class 8) and Croatia, Mihai against Belgium (no 2 ) and Poland (17) and all lost. Petru played against Serbia and won but lost to Italy and Slovakia..

Yes it was indeed a very difficult competition but in the end Dacian won 150 WRP, Petru won 230 WRP while Dorina won 30. Not a bad result.
