Competitions in 2003

2003 is a banner year for the Lamont Centre Sports Team.  The Team is competing in more competitions  than in any previous year.
The highlight is the Team's participation in more than 3 international competitions in 4 different countries.

This competition marked the first time that Mihai and Boby represented the the Lamont Centre sports team and Romania in a world-class competition.

22 countries were represented including China, Japan, and  Taipei.

For the team's first such international outing, the results proved that we were not in the same class as the other competitors and have work to do.  However, it was a marvelous experience and now our team has great ambitions to progress.

This marked the first step to reach international class and as most of the competitors were much older and have competed internationally before, we are sure that with dedication, practice and more experience, our competitors will become serious contenders on the international sport stage.

Cross-Country for Europe

Saturday, May 10

Bucharest, Romania

"Cross-Country for Europe" was a competition organized on the occasion of the European Year for People with Disabilities by the Romanian Federation of Sports for the Disabled and the National Authority for Disabled People of Bucharest.

300 people participated and the running distance was 3 km.  The competition was organized by gender, disability, and age groups: 12-15; 16-18; 19+.   The course comprised 3 lanes: Lane 1

(participants with physical disabilities, including wheelchair users); Lane 2 (participants with hearing and speech impairments); Lane 3 (Participants with mental disability).

Every participant received a T-shirt, cap, badge, and diploma.  The winners of the first place in each category received a cup and medal.  2nd and 3rd place winners received medals.

Ovidiu Bohan, Dacian Makszin and Alex Diaconu represented the Lamont Centre.

Everyone had a super time, the weather was fine and as the first ever of its kind ever held in Romania, we hope it will become an annual event.

Szombathely International Paralympic Cup

June 5 - 7, 2003

Szombathely, Hungary

In 38 degree weather, 6 members of the Lamont Centre sports team travelled the 700 km from Cluj to Szombathely, Hungary, for the 2-day Szombathely International Paralympic Cup.

There were 12 teams from abroad (Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Germany, Romania), 8 teams from Hungary resulting in more than 110 contestants.

The Individual competition was very difficult for the Lamont Centre Sports Team members (and others) because the strict disability classification scheme was not adhered to, resulting in class 6 people playing with class 8 and 9 and, in one case, class 10.  This is not usual in international competitions. There were a lot of arguments against this and in the end many official complaints. Last year in Hungary the same thing occurred but there was a problem with numbers so many classes had to be combined. In the Czech Republic in April, all classes were strictly upheld. Lets hope that next year Hungary will listen because this corruption makes a mockery of true sportsmanship.

Lugoj, Romania

This annual international competition comprised of 75 people from 13 individual teams including two teams from Hungary and one from France. The competitions included were table tennis, athletics and darts.

A highlight of the three days was a demonstration of wheelchair tennis, which was organized by Motivation Bucharest and the World Federation of Tennis.

Slovakia Open Table Tennis Competition

October 1 - 5, 2003

Piestany, Slovakia

This international competition was a real challenge for the members of the Lamont Centre team.  We learned some things about the rules for international competitions.

There were some technical difficulties with Dacian's wheelchair, which forced him to forfeit some matches.

Although all team members played their best, they did not place in any awards.  We are looking forward to more experience, maturity and knowledge in international competitions in the future and hope to increase our standings.

This newly formed nationaL event could not have been made possible without the sponsorship received from a Rotary Club from Dundee under its 2003 President, Harrison Watson, Editor of the magazine My Weekly.  The sponsorship received ensure that the even could be staged it in the style it deserved and the participants could be provided with full board and accommodation for the duration of the event.

35 participants came to participate from all over Romania in this 2-day event.  The competitors from the Lamont Centre did very well and as a direct result of this contest, they ahve been invited to build a team to play in the national chess B League.  A first for our members!
